History of Moj Mir
In 2003, my wife and I had the privilege of acquiring the remarkable «Villa Moj Mir,» nestled atop a breathtaking cliff at the gateway to the historic harbor of Sibenik. This architectural gem, originally built in 1904 by the visionary Italian pharmacist Mr. Della Feste, blends history and natural beauty, standing majestically on the foundations of the ancient Venetian medieval tower, Juzni Turan.
Embracing the challenge of restoring its grandeur, we meticulously constructed an approximately 2km access road, introducing modern amenities like electricity and water, while preserving the villa’s historic charm. Villa Moj Mir, a testament to various historical epochs, was once a part of Sibenik’s formidable fortification system, potentially dating back to the 16th century.
The villa’s rich history includes a period of ownership by a distinguished lawyer’s family from Zagreb and a significant role during the communist era, serving as a residence for Dr. Ivan Ribar, a close associate of Tito. It even has tales of clandestine visits by Tito himself, as recounted by the former chief of local police.
In World War II, the villa witnessed history when the British targeted an Italian merchant ship, the «Milano», anchored nearby, leaving an indelible mark on the property and its surroundings. The post-war era saw the villa reverting to its original owners following Croatia’s independence.
